Student Support

Below are excerpts from the High School Handbook. For a complete edition, please follow the High School Handbook link and download the pdf file.

A healthy learning environment is created out of the willing cooperation of teachers, students, and parents in support of the philosophy, expectations, and policies of the school. Of primary importance is the recognition in Waldorf education that each person is an evolving spiritual being. From this comes the striving to achieve mutual understanding, to honor the worth of every individual, and to create a community based on honesty, integrity, and respect.

Student support program

High school students participate in the school's student support program. One remedial teacher is available to provide instruction for students with special needs. This teacher can provide student assessments and make recommendations for student accommodation. Class Sponsors ensure that special needs are communicated to all teachers who teach a particular student. Several teachers provide after-school tutoring for students in specific subject areas. In addition, private tutors provide additional instruction either on or off-campus for students who have made arrangements for this or for whom this is required as a condition of enrollment.

Class sponsor

Each high school class is guided by a Class Sponsor or Sponsors. It is intended that the sponsor(s) oversee a single class throughout the four year period if possible. If there are concerns, parents should communicate directly with the teacher involved. If they feel that the situation has not been handled sufficiently, then they may contact the Class Sponsor. The Class Sponsor will meet with the class as a whole to discuss matters of concern or interest to the whole class. The Class Sponsor organizes and facilitates class meetings, project meetings, parent evenings, community service projects, and other class events and functions.

Registrar

The registrar maintains student academic records including grade reports, and develops, updates, and prints transcripts.

Library and Computer Lab

There is a large collection of books in the high school library which is currently located in the humanities classroom. In addition, specialized libraries are contained in each classroom, including the two science laboratories, the Spanish and German rooms, and the art room. More than eight computers are available for student use in the high school. Students have access to the internet for research.

Study Skills and Life Skills

The freshman year begins with a focus on study skills and time management techniques, with particular emphasis on homework management.  A variety of study skills are learned and practiced.

Learning how to develop and maintain healthy relationships, good nutrition, open communication, and healthy lifestyle habits are themes that are discussed throughout the high school years with the guidance of health care professionals and faculty members.
