*The East Bay Waldorf School uses an unweighted grading system. We do not add
extra points for Honors, AP, or college level courses. At present, we do not offer any AP courses.

The East Bay Waldorf School does not rank students. We offer a prescribed comprehensive curriculum using block scheduling combined with year-long courses. Ten credits is the equivalent of one Carnegie unit, or one year of course work. Many of our courses are offered in discrete course segments in each of the four high school years.

High School Student Profile

High School

Student Profile 2007/2008

School community

The East Bay Waldorf School is a non-profit, independent, coeducational institution offering instruction based on the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The school is located on a spacious campus of 11 acres which includes gardens, trees, ponds, and student sculpture amid the rolling hills of Contra Costa County. The school's purpose is to enable students to become inspired and effective in the world with a love of life and learning. The high school curriculum meets the unique needs of adolescents with rigorous academics, artistic discipline, and practical challenge, preparing students to face the future with confidence, competence, and initiative. The school offers the benefits of seminar-style classes with a rich, challenging curriculum in a beautiful natural setting.

The school's students are drawn from communities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, including the cities of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Emeryville, Kensington, Lafayette, Oakland, Pinole, Pleasant Hill, Point Richmond, Richmond, San Francisco, San Pablo, San Leandro, Vallejo, and Walnut Creek. Several foreign exchange students attend the school each year. While many of the students (70%) have participated in Waldorf education during elementary school, the high school also welcomes students from other public, parochial, and independent schools (30%).

Curriculum

The high school offers a comprehensive and balanced curriculum, including academic and artistic offerings, which exceeds most college entrance requirements and prepares students for a full range of career goals. The Waldorf high school curriculum is carefully designed to address the developmental stages of adolescence. Each of the core subjects is visited each year with a different emphasis through the main lesson blocks which focus on one subject in depth for 100 minutes per morning for a period of three or four weeks. These morning lessons rotate subject areas (history, chemistry, literature, etc.) throughout the year, and they supplement the year-long classes in English, mathematics, social studies, foreign language, arts and crafts, performing arts, music, and physical education. The culmination of the high school education is the ability of students to think for themselves with the confidence that they can make a positive contribution in life.

The East Bay Waldorf School does not offer any Advanced Placement courses. The breadth and rigor of the Waldorf curriculum prepares students to participate fully in a college level curriculum.

The East Bay Waldorf School (K-12) is fully accredited by the Schools Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA). The school welcomes students of any color, race, gender, or sexual orientation, and all ethnic, national, cultural, social, or religious backgrounds.

Special Programs and Extracurricular Activities

The East Bay Waldorf School is a member of the North Coast Section of the California Interscholastic Federation, and offers seasonal games and competitions with other schools. Sports include boys and girls basketball, soccer, baseball (boys), volleyball (girls), and track and field. The curriculum includes a work experience program that culminates in individual two-week internships in the Junior and Senior years. Activities and clubs include drama club, music ensembles, student government, environmental awareness, Model United Nations, social events, yearbook, ski trips, and kayaking.
